¿Qué son los primeros auxilios?

First aid is a set of actions and techniques that allow the immediate attention of a person victim of a sudden injury or damage. Its function is to provide help or support to that person to prevent the injury from worsening until professional medical assistance arrives / Los primeros auxilios son un conjunto de acciones y técnicas que permiten la atención inmediata de una persona víctima de una lesión o daño repentino. Su función es la de brindar ayuda o soporte a aquella persona para evitar que empeoren las lesiones, hasta que llegue la asistencia médica profesional.

Importancia de los primeros auxilios

The importance of first aid lies in giving anyone the ability to provide immediate help in any emergency situation. If a person has an allergy, suffers a heart attack or is injured in a natural disaster, another person in the same place, with the basic but necessary knowledge of first aid, will be able to counteract the severity of the accident and positively influence the work of the medical assistance professionals / La importancia de los primeros auxilios radica en ofrecerle, a cualquier persona, la capacidad de proporcionar ayuda inmediata ante cualquier situación de emergencia. Si una persona tiene un cuadro alérgico, sufre un ataque al corazón o sufre lesiones en un desastre natural, otra persona que se encuentra en el mismo lugar, con los conocimientos básicos, pero necesarios de primeros auxilios, podrá contrarrestar la gravedad del accidente e influenciar positivamente en la labor de los profesionales de asistencia médica. 

Principios básicos

There are 3 fundamental steps that must be applied, in order, when providing assistance to an accident victim. This procedure, known as PAS, consists of the following points: / Existen 3 pasos fundamentales que se deben aplicar, en orden, al brindar ayuda a algún accidentado. Este procedimiento, conocido como PAS, consta de los siguientes puntos: 

1. Proteger. The first thing to keep in mind is to remain calm, but act quickly. This gives confidence to the victim and those nearby. This not only reassures the victim, but also the people around, if the accident occurred in the street or a place where there are more than 2 people. After this, signaling is important because it delimits the space of the injured person / Lo primero que se debe tener en cuenta es mantener la calma, pero actuar rápidamente. Esto le brinda confianza a la víctima y a aquellos que se encuentren cerca. Esto no solo tranquiliza a la víctima, sino también a las personas que se encuentren alrededor, si es que el accidente se dio en la calle o un lugar en donde se encuentran más de 2 personas. Luego de esto, la señalización es importante porque delimita el espacio del accidentado.

2. Avisar. After securing the victim in the first step, relevant and detailed information about what happened should be reported and given to the relevant professionals for prompt intervention / Luego de haber asegurado a la víctima en el primer paso, se debe avisar y dar información relevante y detallada de lo que ocurrió a los profesionales pertinentes para su pronta intervención.

3. Socorrer. Attending to the victim is the last step, however, the severity of the injury must be assessed first to know if first aid can be administered or if professional assistance is needed / El atender a la víctima es el último paso, sin embargo, primero se debe evaluar la gravedad del herido para luego saber si se puede intervenir con primeros auxilios o si se necesita de asistencia profesional.
